Chiropractic Care in the Treatment of Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

Though chiropractic care cannot cure MS, it may provide significant relief to the pain and discomfort that individuals experience from MS symptoms.

Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple Sclerosis, also known as MS, is a disabling autoimmune disease. Patients with MS, have compromised immune systems that undergo activities that destruct the tissue that surrounds and safeguards the nerves within the spinal cord and brain.

The nerve damage that is caused as a result of MS symptoms, results in disabling complications such as changes in brain function, muscle spasms, and paralysis. Symptoms can range in severity from mild to extreme. MS symptoms are often treated with medication and physical therapy.

Spine Alignment

Manual adjustments reduce inflammation and restore joints to the systems that support them. Two unique chiropractic techniques we incorporate into our services are spinal decompression and upper cervical adjustments. Spinal decompression is nonsurgical, motorized traction that may relieve back pain. By gently stretching your spine, our chiropractor may take pressure off spinal discs (the cushions between the backbones).

The Musculoskeletal System

Your musculoskeletal system includes all of the connective tissues, ligaments, tendons and bones, it is the structure of your soft tissues and muscles which supports your overall posture and movement. The musculoskeletal system has five main elements; blood circulation, heat generation, muscle support and support for your internal organs, and skeletal muscles that support your bones during movement. Chiropractic care manages the musculoskeletal system, which may result in a beneficial treatment for patients with MS.

Foot drop

Foot drop also referred to as drop foot, is a symptom of MS as it is a sign of an underlying neurological problem. With foot drop, the front of the foot drags on the ground. MS causes foot drops which results in severe hip pain. Visiting your chiropractor may reduce the swelling and pain that individuals with foot drop experience.

Compromised mobility

Fingers, toes, and legs all require mobility. Patients with MS who undergo chiropractic care often experience an increase in mobility after their appointment. Through routine procedures, stretches and techniques, visiting your chiropractor helps place your body back into alignment, which may result in your body parts experiencing an increase in mobility and movement.

Additional benefits

When our bodies feel good, we feel good. Though MS is a chronic illness, the relief that patients may experience by visiting the chiropractor not only helps them manage the pain but provides an optimistic mood and confidence boost.
