Sinus Headaches and Chiropractic Care: Finding Natural Relief

If you’re feeling an intense headache pain in your face – notably around the nasal bridge, the cheekbones or the forehead – you may be suffering from a sinus headache. While oftentimes what we may be experiencing is a migraine, a sinus headache is actually the result of a sinus infection, or sinusitis.

What is sinusitis?

A sinusitis is an inflammation or swelling of your sinuses, which are cavities located inside our faces behind the cheekbones, nose and forehead. The sinuses are connected to one another and produce mucus to drain out the passages in your nose to keep them clean from allergens, bacteria or viruses. Sinuses are normally filled with air, but can become infected typically by viruses like the common cold or COVID, or by some bacteria.  Allergies can cause or exacerbate sinus infections and add to or prolong the pain and discomfort of a sinus infection.

Sinusitis typically lasts a few days to a week or so, similar to the common cold, but there are acute and chronic versions that can last 4 to 12 weeks or more. Recurrent sinusitis has symptoms that return a number of times per year and typically lasts less than 2 weeks each time.

Common Symptoms of Sinusitis

Some of the more typical signs of a sinus headache or sinus infection are:

  • Pressure or pain in the forehead, cheekbones or bridge of the nose
  • Pain worsens if you bend forward or lie down
  • Stuffy or congested nose
  • Runny nose with thick coloured mucus

How Chiropractic Care May Help with Sinus Headaches

If you’re suffering from sinusitis or sinus headaches, it’s always best to consult your healthcare provider as medication may be necessary in some cases.

Your chiropractor may help to provide relief from the pain and congestion with a combination of treatments like sinus relief massage, trigger point therapy, nasal specific manipulations and other treatment options which would be discussed at the time of your consultation.

The right combination of chiropractic techniques and therapies may help alleviate sinus pain and any sinus-related headaches you may be experiencing.
